Stars and Stripers

2013 Tournament

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing
5th Annual
"Stars and Stripers" Fishing Tournament
August 23, 2014

Background and History

Project Healing Waters has recognized the benefits associated with fly fishing in the rehabilitation of our nation’s veterans suffering from physical and psychological trauma incurred while defending our Nation.

Program participants are joined by PHW volunteers at their points of rehabilitation, where they learn skills such as casting, fly tying, rod building and other techniques. These skills are then used as participants are hosted at various Fly Fishing events to apply their newly acquired skills.

In 2010, PHW teamed with "Professional" Salt Water Fly Fishing Guides for a day of fishing on the Chesapeake Bay for Striped Bass. The event has grown in size and interest, and has much of Maryland’s “Eastern Shore” community supporting the effort.

This year’s event is packed with activities including:

·        -  An “All Fly Fishing Competition” for “NOMINATED” PHWFF wounded warrior Program Participants

·        -  More casual light tackle and fly fishing opportunities for “Non Tournament” Wounded Warriors and their families

·        -  Boat trips aboard a beautifully appointed large pleasure boat to observe the activities or simply relax on the Bay for families not wishing to fish.

·        -  And a unique opportunity to experience “dipping for crabs” from the deck of the beautifully restored Chesapeake workboat “The Karen L”.

We also suggest you bring an appetite, as our hosts at Dominion Marina have assembled members of the community to put on a spread of food that will begin with a hearty breakfast and end with an Eastern Shore Barbecue and Crab feast.

Most of all the day is about fun and relaxation using the fly-fishing skills acquired in the various Project Healing Waters programs around the region.  It is also a way for a grateful community to show appreciation for the sacrifices made by our recovering PHW Warriors who have served, and to the families who support them.
