Beaver Creek Outing

August the 16th found a group of PHW types back at Beaver Creek. 1LT Danny Psoinos, new travel rod in hand; 1LT Eivind Forseth, bamboo equipped; Bill Johnston, old fiberglass relic armed; Barry Yancosek, new Cabelas rod ready; and myself, trying to hold on to my new Zero Gravity rig.

The group was there, behind Doug Hutzell’s place (thank you Doug), after the all-season trout of Maryland’s only spring fed stream (3500gpm upstream of the fly fishing only section). There were literally thousands of trout in the stream. That they were only 6 inches long was a minor sizing detail, but trout they were. There in abundance, courtesy of a major rain event a month earlier that flooded the fish hatchery and released five or six thousand of them. Our group had plenty of hook ups and an opportunity to refine that particular aspect of the fly fishing art - not much of a bend in the rod, but plenty of fun none-the-less.

After exhausting ourselves catching all the trout, we headed over to the Catoctin Gun Club, guests of the local Ruff Grouse Society, who were putting on their yearly dinner and fun shoot. After a few rounds of trap and a hearty dinner it was back to Walter Reed. Not a bad way to spend a day!
