c9cfd347-2ece-4021-931f-667a8663c34eThe partnership between Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing and Reel Recovery has entered its second year and added new collaborative retreats in Colorado, Texas, and Virginia to offer increased therapeutic angling opportunities for male veterans in the cancer recovery process by introducing them to the healing properties of nature and the sport of fly fishing.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF), a nonprofit that supports disabled active military and veterans through fly fishing, is working closely with Reel Recovery, to give veterans in the cancer recovery process the opportunity to enjoy the healing properties of nature and fly fishing.    The Reel Recovery program employs fly fishing in a safe, supportive environment for participants to explore their personal experiences of cancer with others who share their stories to improve the lives of the men they serve.   It is through these parallel activities and peer support that PHWFF veteran participants and cancer survivors will have new opportunities to heal.

The first joint-retreat of 2016 will take place at Bar Lazy J Ranch in Kremmling, Colorado on September 30 – October 2.  This retreat is offered at no-cost to the participants and will be led by professional facilitators and expert fly fishing instructors.  Opportunities are still available to male veterans in the cancer recovery process to attend this special three-day retreat.  To learn more please visit reelrecovery.org/programs/retreat-schedule

These retreats offer an outstanding venue for PHWFF participants in the cancer recovery process to continue on their journey of healing and recovery, while becoming involved with another like-minded community and organization.

“We’re thrilled to have partnered with PHWFF to expand Reel Recovery’s Retreat Program to male veterans living with cancer. While we’ve had many veterans attend our retreats over the past 13 years, we are honored to continue partnering with PHWFF to serve these courageous men as a group.” – Stan Golub, Executive Director – Reel Recovery

Through involvement with the work and activities of Reel Recovery, veterans will advance their skills in the sport of fly fishing while joining a new community of friends and mentors who share their own personal experiences with cancer.  The educational component of both organizations missions’ couple perfectly with the therapeutic respite intrinsically embedded in nature and the sport of fly fishing.

“Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing’s partnership with Reel Recovery will allow our organization to further our mission of healing disabled veterans through fly fishing and allow us to better serve our participants who are recovering from cancer.  It means a lot to me to be able to support this event since I’m both a wounded veteran and a cancer survivor.” – David Folkerts, Chief Operating Officer – Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing

About Reel Recovery:

The mission of Reel Recovery is to help men in the cancer recovery process by introducing them to the healing powers of the sport of fly-fishing, while providing a safe, supportive environment to explore their personal experiences of cancer with others who share their stories. Their purpose is to address the growing demand for and limited supply of support services specifically tailored for men with cancer. Our overarching goal is to improve the lives of the men we serve. We seek to give these courageous men a respite from their day-to-day concerns so that they might gain a fresh outlook on their fight with cancer; we facilitate discussions that give them strength, encouragement and a new network of friends and support; we provide cancer information and resources to enable better management of their disease; and we provide them new skills to bring joy, enthusiasm and renewed hope as they confront the challenges of their cancer survivorship.
