As a way of recognizing the tens of thousands of volunteer hours given each year to Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing by our talented and caring volunteers, PHWFF Regions recognize one outstanding volunteer each year.  We are pleased to announce that Bob Fryer has been selected as Volunteer of the Year for the Virginia Region.

Bob Fryer has been a five year plus Volunteer for Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. He began when what is now the Hampton Roads Program were two programs: the Fort Eustis Warrior Transition Unit and the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center. These were two programs that volunteers meet with participants every week. It remains true today that two weeks a month the new program meets at the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center. And two week s month the program meets at a Disabled American Veterans facility in Newport News. With rare exception, Bob is always there. Week after week, and year after year, he has taken on numerous roles with a smile and always follows through on the things that need to be done, without needing to be asked, and sees them through.

Over the years, Bob has become an Assistant Program Lead of the Hampton Roads programs He has served in the roles of fly tying instructor, fly casting instructor, rod building instructor, fly fishing guide, organizer of trips, participant in numerous overnight outings as well as mentor and friend to the warriors and veterans he has served. He has developed meaningful relationships with the disabled veterans he has served and so many look at him as a role model.
