Project Healing Waters Participating in Combined Federal Campaign

November 17, 2022

For many years, Project Healing Waters has participated in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The CFC is the official workplace giving campaign for federal employees and federal retirees. In 2021, monetary pledges for the entire CFC totaled nearly $78.1 million and more than 80,000 volunteer hours were pledged.

The Project Healing Waters CFC code is #82526

This year’s theme for the CFC is “You Can Be the Face of Change.” We want to raise awareness so that current federal employees and federal retirees know that they can choose PHW as a charity to support through the CFC. The campaign is currently ongoing, and ends on January 14, 2023.

Why is it important for our supporters to know that we participate in the CFC? By helping us to spread the word, federal employees and federal retirees will hear from someone they know and trust that PHW participates in the CFC, and they can choose us as a charity to support. Any funds raised from the CFC will allow us to offer additional healing opportunities for the Veterans we serve across the country.

So, how can you help? Spread the word! If you are a federal employee or federal retiree or know someone who is, let them know that PHW participates in the CFC! Our 5-digit code is 82526. If you see PHW share any CFC-related information, including this blog, on our social media, share, share, share!

If you are a federal employee, you can pledge an amount to be withheld regularly from your pay beginning in January of each year or make a one-time gift. In order to make a donation to Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, you must use our CFC code #82526. For more information, ask the CFC representative at your agency for a copy of the CFC pamphlet that is available each fall.

As always, PHW appreciates the support we receive to help increase the healing opportunities for all of the Veterans we serve. It does make a difference!

PHWFF Parkersburg Attends Overnight Outing at Elk Springs Resort

April 12, 2022

For the first time since before the COVID 19 pandemic took over our lives, the Parkersburg program held its first overnight outing at Elk Springs Resort in Monterville, WV. We had 9 participants and 9 volunteers attend the outing.

Everyone arrived on Friday, April 1st, unfortunately, in a snow squall with a muddy river. However, we had beautiful accommodations at Elk Springs Resort with the Broadwater Lodge and the Sportsman’s Cabin. Everyone got settled in, started tying some flies, and visiting. We then had our first wonderful meal from The Kickin’ Chicken, which was an Italian feast. After everyone stuffed themselves with food, West Virginia Regional Coordinator Bubba Holt gave an entertaining and informational presentation on bugs.

The next morning, we all joined together for a wonderful breakfast before heading off to get some fishing in at Point Mountain Wilderness. It was a beautiful landscape, with clear water, a waterfall, and snow covering the ground. We fished all morning, and participant Bill L. caught three rainbow trout. Not surprising to any of us as Bill is always the one landing fish, but unfortunately, were the only fish caught all weekend. We had a great lunch overlooking the water, and then headed back to the resort where the water had cleared up and was fishable. We spent the rest of the day trying out new techniques and fishing the water right around the resort.

After getting some fishing in and some sight seeing in some beautiful weather, we gathered together for another wonderful dinner, which consisted of chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, salad, and dessert, of course! After dinner, everyone joined in some great fellowship and some fly tying, capping off the end of a wonderful day.

When Sunday came around, it was time to head back home, and the weather turned bad again, with temperatures in the 40s and a lot of wind. We had a great last meal together, and then everyone was able to take boxed lunches with them on their journeys home. While many fish weren’t caught, it was wonderful being back together in such a beautiful location. We talked, we laughed, we learned, we ate (a lot!) and we can’t wait until our next adventure together as a program.

We want to give a huge shout out to the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation. Without their generous $10,000 grant, this outing would not have been possible. We also want to thank the Elk Springs Resort for providing us with amazing accommodations in a beautiful setting. And, we can’t forget to thank The Kickin’ Chicken for the amazing food they prepared for us all weekend! Finally, to the participants and volunteers who were able to join us for this wonderful weekend, thank you – we couldn’t have done it without you!

On to the next adventure!

PHWFF Parkersburg Receives $1,000 Donation from the Blennerhassett Chapter of Trout Unlimited

March 10, 2022

The Blennerhassett Chapter of Trout Unlimited (BCTU) recently made a $1,000 donation to the PHWFF Parkersburg program. BCTU has been a longtime supporter of PHWFF Parkersburg, giving several monetary and in kind donations over the years. The BCTU members have also volunteered for the Parkersburg program, doing such things as leading fly tying sessions for the PHWFF Parkersburg program.

“Without the support of our TU partner, the BCTU, we wouldn’t be able to do everything that we are able to do for our participants,” said Sarah Holt, PHWFF Parkersburg Program Lead. “They have supported us in many different ways throughout the years, from monetary and in kind donations to volunteering their time. We are truly grateful for their support and partnership.”

The donation from the BCTU will go directly towards supporting the participants of the PHWFF Parkersburg program by helping to purchase needed extra materials and equipment and help towards costs of day and overnight outings. The PHWFF Parkersburg program has a lot planned for the upcoming year, including its first overnight outing in over two years at Elk Springs Resort the weekend of April 1-3, 2022. Donations like this will help towards those costs, and providing unforgettable experiences for our participants.

Thank you to the BCTU for your continued support!

Kalee Kelly, RE/MAX One, Wins Battle of the Baskets for Southern Maryland Slam

January 24, 2022

For the 2021 Southern Maryland Slam fundraiser held in September, Kalee Kelly was declared the winner of the 2021 Battle of the Baskets for the Southern Maryland Slam, a title she also won for the 2020 event.

For this year’s online auction, Kalee donated a basket titled “It’s Party Time!” This basket, which was actually a party bucket, included a rod and reel, Partida Blanco Tequila, glassware, taco and margarita kit, a picture, and dinnerware. The basket won the Battle of the Baskets contest with a $265 winning bid.

Other realtors who participated in this year’s Battle of the Baskets included:

Stefanie Odom – The Fidelis Group at RE/MAX One – An Igloo Full of Goodies!

Ruth Mudd – Mudd Group, LLC – Basket of Margarita Fun!

Kathleen Flanagan – RE/MAX One – It’s a Dog’s Life

Matt Burgan – The Fidelis Group at RE/MAX One – Let’s Go Fishing!

We truly appreciate the support of Kalee and the other realtors for the Southern Maryland Slam, and our participants across the country in our 220-plus programs.

When asked for a quote that Kalee felt best described the fact of why she got involved with Battle of the Baskets, she used a quote from William J. Brennan that states “We must meet the challenge rather than wish it were not before us.” At Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc., our participants and volunteers do that every day.

We look forward to our next Southern Maryland Slam, and Battle of the Baskets, in the fall of 2022, and we hope to be back together in person!

The Parkersburg, WV program of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. (PHWFF) recently received a $10,000 grant from the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation & Regional Affiliates. The grant was received to provide therapeutic activities, including equipment and overnight outings, to our participants.

“We were excited, honored, and humbled to receive a grant of this size from the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation,” said Sarah Holt, Program Lead, Parkersburg program. “Due to the pandemic, we haven’t taken an overnight outing with our participants for a couple of years. We are excited to take a couple of overnight outings with our participants this year, and we can do so thanks to this generous grant.”

The program plans to do an overnight outing in the spring and fall. Any unused grant funding will then be put towards purchasing additional materials and equipment as the program has continued to grow.
