Who we are

PHW uses the restorative activities of fly fishing to help our participants adapt, heal, and discover Post-Traumatic Growth. Our programs offer a very special kind of rehabilitative therapy: a therapy based not only on the fly rod and vise, but also the incredible healing power of camaraderie among fellow Veterans and the mentoring and friendship provided by strong, caring volunteers.

What we do

Our program provides equipment and resources, from one-day outings to overnight trips, all free of charge. That way, Veterans and Volunteers can focus on what matters: healing.

How we can help you

For many participants, particularly Veterans in need, the socialization and camaraderie of the classes are just as critical as the fishing outings, and provide them a new therapeutic activity. The Project Healing Waters program provides basic fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying and rod building classes. PHW caters to participants of all skill levels, from those who have never fished before, to those with prior fly fishing and tying experience now adapting their skills to their new abilities. All fly fishing and tying equipment is provided to the participants at no cost. Fishing trips, both one day and multi-day, are also provided free of charge to participants. Our volunteers are teaching classes on an on-going, long term basis, meaning it is so much more than a one day fishing trip.

Testimonials

This journey has been a transformative one for me, especially in dealing with my PTSD as a disabled veteran. The process of crafting a bamboo rod, the tranquility of fly fishing, and the victories in each catch are my own forms of therapy, healing me in ways traditional medicine couldn’t. It is a respite from my typical solitary existence and a welcome diversion that offers not just a physical activity but also an engaging and rewarding mental exercise.
