Six disabled veteran participants from the San Francisco program of PHWFF ventured in mid-July on a three-day outing to Cal Trout’s “Shasta Springs Trout Camp” on the upper Sacramento River in northern California.  Cal Trout’s “Fly Fishing Ambassador” Craig Ballenger and Wild Waters Fly Fishing guides John Rickard and Chuck Volckhausen introduced the veteran participants to techniques for nymph fishing and wading the challenging waters of the upper Sacramento and nearby McCloud Rivers.

In addition, the participants were treated to an evening of bass fishing on scenic Lake Siskiyou, the backdrop of which is 14,000+ foot Mt. Shasta to the east and the Eddie mountains to the west.  Dinners around the Trout Camp’s campfire provided memorable opportunities for the vets to swap fish stories, to hear tales of Ambassador Craig’s past climbing expeditions on El Capitan and in the Himalayas, and to enjoy one another’s company.

Many thanks to Cal Trout for once again making its Trout Camp available to those who have served our country!
