What a perfect setting for dozens of military veterans, from several generations of combat and conflicts, to gather for some fly fishing activities.
Graduate students from the Recreation Therapy department, under the leadership of Dr. Lyn Litchke, teamed up to host several water recreation activities for our veterans. Included in the mix were SCUBA, Paddleboard Yoga, Rafting, Water Skiing, White Water Kayaking, and of course Fly Fishing.
Veterans, and active duty military personnel, from B.A.M.C. and Ft. Sam Houston, Ft. Hood, Audie L. Murphy VA hospital, Hill Country Veterans Peer Network, Hays County Veterans Services, TSU Veterans Alliance, TSU Veterans Tutor Corp, and Alamo Fly Fishers, and Central Texas Fly Fishers all contributed to the success of this amazing joint venture.
Participants loved the fly tying and fly casting areas, and we stayed busy for several hours teaching and assisting a new crop of fly fishers. At least two of our veterans were able to tie a fly, cast, and catch their first fish . . . . all in one afternoon.
We even had a group of students from the Texas School for the Blind show up to tie flies and cast fly rods. They heard about our support for the veterans and wanted to join in. They did great!
Many thanks to the huge team of helpers, supporters, and donors who love our military veterans. Without you . . . none of this great work would be possible.
