One doesn’t usually associate the far southern part of New Mexico with fly fishing, but Mesilla Valley Flyfishers is able to pull it off. MVFF stocks the river a week before the soldiers from Ft. Bliss arrive and the fishing is usually good.Though the weather was really windy, it didn’t dampen the soldiers’ enthusiasm for fishing and enjoyment of our leased property on the Rio Penasco River at the Elliott’s Ranch in Hope, NM. The recent outing hosted 18 wounded servicemen and women. Several trout in the 14-16 inch range were caught.
This is the seventh year of MVFF’s Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing program. This partnership has been a win-win for all involved. The camaraderie turns into friendships and the appreciation is humbling. Another highlight of the outing is the feast prepared by the Yucca CowBelles, the local ranchers wives who create a feast of homemade recipes that is beyond description.
