On Friday March 31, 2017 the Roanoke/New Rivers, VA Program took to the Cowpasture River in Millboro, Virginia for a great day of angling in this beautiful and relaxing setting. This was the second annual Cowpasture River trip hosted by our friends at the Star City Hunt Club. They treated a group of 20 veterans and volunteers to a fantastic hot breakfast of biscuits and sausage gravy, eggs, grits and lots of hot coffee. After breakfast, the veteran participants fished their private 2-mile stretch on the Cowpasture River that the club had stocked a couple of days before the trip. A hot dog and chili lunch was served riverside followed by a few more hours of fishing. Most of the veterans were successful in landing a rainbow or two despite the rain throughout the day.
The trip was the first fly fishing experience on a river for some of the participants and it was a special day witnessing these first time moments. A memorable moment came when Butch Lawrence, a blind veteran, hooked and landed a feisty rainbow trout.
We would like to thank The Star City Hunt Club for treating the group to an awesome day of fishing and fellowship.
