For the third year, Forrester’s Bighorn River Resort and several local guides hosted 8 Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) participants for three days fishing on Montana’s legendary Bighorn River April 26-30. The resort exceeded all expectations, providing very modern comfy cabins and treating the veterans to delicious gourmet meals. Although the river was running at record high levels for late April, the knowledgeable guides, fishing from drift boats, got everyone into big feisty wild trout every day. For the most part, the weather cooperated, offering up two bright sunny days. The anglers, who all came from areas outside the western U.S., were amazed at the average size and fighting ability of the Bighorn trout.
On the way to the lodge, we made an interesting side trip to the Little Bighorn Battlefield (where Custer had a very bad day!).
All of the participants became much better anglers, raved about the great hospitality, Montana scenery, and outstanding fishing, and would certainly recommend this event for other PHWFF participants. We would like to thank Nick and Francine Forrester, their staff, and the expert guides that made this unforgettable trip possible. – Bob Frey, Volunteer Trip Leader
Here are some testimonials from this trip:
PHWFF has provided me with a connection with other veterans. Robert Frey was an amazing volunteer.
Bob Frey was wonderful. The staff at the resort were great and the food was superb.
My sincere thanks for a truly memorable trip to fish the Bighorn River in Montana! The coordination efforts of David Folkerts and on-site management provided by Bob Frey were superb. The accommodations and meals provided by Forrester’s Bighorn Resort were absolutely five star! The fishing was wonderful… nets filled with rainbows, browns and whitefish, despite a couple of cold, rainy, windy days. Montana itself pulled through and capped off our event with one absolutely spectacular day of sunshine, warmth, and tight lines! Nothing, however, could compare to the wonderful fellowship and camaraderie of the PHWFF participants and volunteers during this event. For me, many memories may fade, but this one won’t! Every single participant and volunteer added something special, I salute each and every one of you! Well done, and Thank You!
I had so much fun pulling fish in all day. We fished with different guides every day and I would have to say that they all had so many great fishing holes and knew where the fish would be. I also liked the different setups each one used, and how each one worked perfectly for the different techniques everyone used. I would say that all of the staff at Forresters Bighorn River Resort, the guides and Bob Fry for putting in all the time to make sure everything went off without a hitch.
