On February 1, the PHWFF Rapid City program gathered at the Outdoor Campus West in Rapid City and learned to tie a couple of effective flies for the area.

“Volunteer Clint taught everyone to tie the Skinny Nelson in a version that is used around the Black Hills,” Program Lead Joshua Osterbur said. “He also showed everyone how to tie a version of the Pat’s Rubber Leg, which is a good stone fly for this time of year. Temperatures have been varying from cold to warm so when the wind isn’t blowing too hard these patterns are very effective around the area.”

Osterbur said that the participants are very excited for the upcoming year, and that the volunteers have some great plans in the works for the program.

Participants will be able to utilize these patterns along with some of the others that they have learned to tie to go after some wintertime trout.

“You can see the tying skills of the veterans improve each month and they are being very comfortable with their tying equipment,” Osterbur said.

There is a new participant who has never tied flies before but enjoys fly fishing. They were excited to jump right in and did a great job! Volunteers were able to help participants along the way and each one made some wonderful looking flies that they will be able to use soon.

Osterbur would like to thank the DAV Chapter #11 out of Piedmont for their continued support in helping our PHWFF Program grow and giving our participants the opportunity to learn new skills! He would also like to thank Clint and the rest of the amazing volunteers.

“I am looking forward to this new year at PHWFF,” Osterbur said. “I am hoping to find new faces to join our group and continue to learn from our volunteers and participants about fly fishing and our life’s journey.”
