The 2019 Project Healing Waters South Central Regional Casting Competition
Erik Larsen, Program Lead of the Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing program in San Marcos, Texas, writes a short article about the recent Regional Fly Casting Competition in our South Central Region.
The PHWFF Fly Casting Competition is hosted in-conjunction with Fly Fishers International. PHWFF and FFI, through the casting competition and their strategic partnership, aim to bring fly fishing and it’s proven therapeutic elements to more disabled veterans who can benefit from it.
What an amazing weekend PHWFF San Marcos program had hosting a pancake breakfast and the South Central Regions casting competition.
Saturday morning, we started off with our pancake breakfast. With the help of our amazing volunteers, and our wonderful partnership with the veteran’s groups on Texas State University, we
welcomed veterans and their families to a pancake breakfast. The pancake breakfast gives these veterans and their family members an introduction into the mission of PHWFF and how it helps
veterans. During this introduction, they learn how to tie flies and cast a fly rod. Some even took the flies they had just tied and with a volunteer helping them, they caught their first fish on a fly. Nothing like catching your first fish on the first fly you ever tied.
To end the morning festivities, the South Central region held their casting competition. Competitors from around the region competed on the modified 5 weight combination game course. The difficulty of the competition became a little harder when the wind started to blow. That did not deter the competitors as they each attacked the course with focus and determination. When the last cast was thrown and all the scores tallied, Christian Fritz came out in first place and Jason Farrar in second. They will be representing the South Central region at the finals this year at the FFI Expo in Bozeman, MT. Congratulations to Christian and Jason.
