PHWFF Auburn Celebrates Veterans Day
Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. Auburn program had a busy weekend celebrating Veterans Day with two exciting events.
The first event “Match the Hatch” was held at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art on Thursday, November 11, in conjunction with their Audubon Art Display.
Volunteers and participants demonstrated fly casting and gave some instruction to the community. Additionally, members of the community were given the opportunity to tie some flies alongside our veteran participants inside the museum.
On Saturday, November 13, PHWFF Auburn held their 3rd Annual “Fly Fishing Mission on the Hatch.”
Mac and Kate Watson opened up their home to participants and volunteers and provided them access to a private section of the Saugahatchee Creek.
After they were all fished out, a big meal was provided to all who attended.
“Both of the events were amazing for different reasons,” participant Rowell Guevarra said. “At the museum, a lot of people in the community came out just to see the fly fishing demonstration and learn to tie flies. We found new participants and volunteers. It was a great day to meet with the folks of Auburn.”
Guevarra said that during the “Fly Fishing Mission on the Hatch” participants and volunteers, and their families were able to share their love of fly fishing, fellowship, and some amazing food.
The highlight of Saturday was when a new participant left his wheelchair on the bank of the creek and boarded a kayak with the help of a volunteer. He ended up catching five different species of fish!
