PHWFF volunteer Amanda Thompson recounts a great day that 5 Pittsburgh, PA participants spent on Yellow Creek thanks to the generosity of the Yellow Creek CoalitionThe President of the Yellow Creek Coalition welcomed five Pittsburgh-area veterans on Sunday, October 23 for a wonderful day on the river. The Yellow Creek Coalition is a non-profit corporation that works to improve the water quality and public access opportunities of Bedford County's Yellow Creek watershed.
Yellow Creek is a limestone spring creek and both stocked fish and wild brown trout are found throughout the stream.
The veterans began the day with instruction from local guides and fly-fishing instructors. Topics included: casting, safe wading techniques, properly releasing fish, mending, and reading water. The veterans enjoyed a delicious fried chicken lunch, provided courtesy of Dana Troutman of Kountry Kettle. Fly boxes and flies were donated by Bob Phillips of International Angler.
In the afternoon, each veteran was partnered with a river helper, who assisted with fly selection and presentation techniques. All in attendance agreed the outing was a hit, and plans are being made to have both a Spring and Fall event.
