Pittsburgh PHWFF Program holds Outing at Yellow Creek in Bedford County
The President of the Yellow Creek Coalition welcomed 10 Pittsburgh-area PHWFF veterans on Sunday, October 21 for a wonderful day on the water. The Yellow Creek Coalition is a non-profit corporation that works to improve the water quality and public access opportunities for Bedford County’s Yellow Creek watershed.
Yellow Creek is a limestone spring creek and both stocked fish and wild brown trout are found throughout the stream.
The veterans began the day with instruction from local guides and fly-fishing instructors. Topics included: entomology, casting, safe wading techniques, properly releasing fish, mending, and reading water.
The veterans enjoyed a delicious fried chicken lunch, provided courtesy of Dana Troutman of Kountry Kettle. Fly boxes and flies were given to each participant.
Ashley Wilmont from the Bellefonte, PA Trout Unlimited office was an instructor and also spoke to the Veterans about the important role of TU in conserving our watersheds. In the afternoon, each veteran was partnered with a river helper, who assisted with fly selection and presentation techniques.
One veteran said, “I had a great time at the fishing event in Bedford. The information about the insects and what to look for on the water and in the air was very interesting and gives you an idea on what flys to use. I thought the casting class was great as well and pointed out some of the things I should be doing. It was a lot of fun and I hope we can do it again… It was a great weekend with everyone and I am looking forward to future events.”
