Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing – Clarksburg, WV Gathers for Steelhead Trip in Ohio
For the second year in a row, 10 veterans and 10 volunteers from the Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc. (PHWFF) program in Clarksburg, West Virginia, gathered in Ashtabula County, Ohio, to chase spring run steelhead.
The event kicked off on the evening of Friday, April 5th, and ran through Sunday, April 7th. Fortunately, for all attending, the weather decided to cooperate and delivered a weekend full of sunshine, warm temperatures, and perfect water flow conditions. Steelhead measuring up to 28-plus inches were landed in several waterways including Conneaut Creek, the Ashtabula River, and several feeder tributaries of these waterways. Due to the warm temperatures, the steelhead were extremely active and aggressive, and readily took offerings of nymphs, streamers, and egg patterns.
For several of the participants, this trip was both their first outing with PHWFF and their first time fishing for Lake Erie steelhead. The enjoyment of being on the water and spending time in great company was clearly evident in the smiles and laughter heard up and down the river. Everyone in attendance agreed that they were looking forward to next year’s steelhead run and all of the upcoming PHWFF events in the West Virginia region.
