Bangor ME Veterans and Volunteers Work to Minimize Pollution in their Local Rivers

0ed6c257-6063-47a3-b40c-95f350ff390dBangor, Maine PHWFF Program volunteers and participants volunteered their time to assist the City of Brewer’s Environmental Services Department with storm drain marking and distributing door hangers in order to spread awareness concerning stormwater pollution. 5 participants and 2 volunteers participated. Markers were installed adjacent to storm drains with a fish in the center and the phrase “Drains to River” marked on them. Door hangers were handed out as well educating local residents about stormwater pollution and things that they can do to minimize the potential for stormwater to be polluted in the first place and to limit the potential for any polluted run-off to enter the storm drain system. Following the event the City of Brewer treated the volunteers to pizza to show their appreciation for the help we provided

“As the Program Lead, it was a wonderful experience for me to see all of the participants engaged with their local communities in order to help spread the word about stormwater pollution. All fly fishers should be conservationists and I think educating the public about ways to minimize polluting our rivers, streams, and lakes is a big part of that. All of the participants had a great time and even learned a few things about stormwater pollution.  My day job is an Environmental Consultant, so seeing our participants get involved with keeping the waters we fish clean meant a lot to me and I think they really enjoyed themselves.  A highlight of the day was watching the participants work together to get the markers put in and the door hangers handed out all while laughing and joking with each other.

I would like to thank Ken Locke with the City of Brewer for giving us the opportunity to help and I would really like to thank all of our participants for volunteering their time to help their local community.” – Jeff Spaulding, PL Bangor, Maine
