Spring weather and great fishing at the Old Soldiers Home in Washington, DC

The DCVMA Project Healing Waters Program enjoyed one of the first nice weekends of spring in the Nation’s capital with their first fishing outing at the ponds located on the grounds of the Old Soldiers Home in the heart of Washington DC last week in April. Altogether, 8 participants fished and caught many bluegill and a few bass at the ponds. This was the first fishing outing for several of our participants, and many are looking forward to returning in May and the coming months.
Fishing in the early morning, top-water activity was good as the bluegills were willing to take small dry flies. Once the bluegills were active the bass came out to play. One of our participants, Thomas, caught two bass on a bluegill colored Clouser minnow. Many learned a great deal about fishing for bass and bluegill on the fly, which was different from their first fly fishing experience on a free-stone creek in Virginia with Project Healing Waters and Double Spur Outfitters.
