NEWS & STORIES

The PHW Spotlight is our way of shining a bright light on those members of our PHW family whose accomplishments and contributions inspire us all.

These individuals, and their stories, are an essential part of the healing journey happening for Veterans across the country. Project Healing Waters transcends fly fishing and these Spotlights are a glimpse into what is happening throughout our programs. We are honored to share these with you each week.

How Long Have You Been Volunteering with Project Healing Waters?

7 years

What Inspired You To Volunteer with Project Healing Waters?

Initially, I joined to help out the then-Program Lead.  I stayed because I could see the good things the Program was doing for our participants.

What Is Your Favorite Activity With Project Healing Waters? Why?

Rod building is my favorite activity.  Not because I love building rods (I don’t) but because the concentration and focus required from the participants while building THEIR rods actually draws them out emotionally and does wonders in terms of engaging and improving fine motor skills.  The Veteran participants also seem to really like the activity, and camaraderie that goes along with the process is excellent.

What Do You Look Forward To With Project Healing Waters In The Upcoming Year? Why?

The Rapid City and Sturgis Programs have a 5-day fishing trip planned in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming this July.  Attending PHW meetings, tying flies, and building rods is enjoyable, but our Veterans are just chomping at the bit to get OUT THERE and put their skills and their hand-built “tools” to use.  Their excitement and anticipation is very infectious!

The PHW Spotlight will publish each Friday morning on www.projecthealingwaters.org. Learn more about this inspiring series HERE
