On April 27th, a group of volunteers helped to staff an information event in the VA Women Veterans Spring Event in Anchorage. The beautiful spring weather brought many women to the event that featured information seminars and health screenings along with VA enrollment assistance. The volunteers taught women how to tie several flies, which they were able to take with them. The “Red” fly is used to catch sockeye salmon and the Crackleback is used for grayling and trout. In addition to tying flies, some basic fishing knots including the improved clinch and double surgeons knots were practiced in anticipation of the fishing season.Red Fly

The volunteers also talked with women about the weekly programs available on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Anchorage at the Fish Hatchery and Tuesdays from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in Wasilla at the VA Veterans Center on Westpoint Dr. and encouraged them to join the program. All VA disabled veterans are eligible for the program, which is free of cost to participants. For more information contact Alaska@projecthealingwaters.org.

Volunteers included Lee, Leslie, Bonnie & Jan – Katie missing from photo. Thanks for helping to staff this information event.
