By Kathy Mueller, Volunteer – Roanoke/New River Valleys program

On Saturday April 2 the Roanoke/New River Valleys Program held a fishing event on the Cowpasture River in Millboro, Virginia. The Cowpasture River has been one of our favorite fishing trips in years past; however, due to the Covid pandemic it has been three years since we were able to meet with our hosts and enjoy this event. We had a group of 23 veteran participants and volunteers, including a new veteran participant from the Hot Springs, VA Program and a volunteer from the Shenandoah Program.

The day started with a hot breakfast of eggs, sausage gravy and homemade biscuits prepared by our host Bruce Lowe and his friends at their hunt club cabin. We enjoyed a full day of fishing and a hot dog and chili lunch prepared for us by the river. Many large, beautiful rainbows were caught. The scenery was incredible!

The most memorable moment was when Veteran Participant Seyward McKinney landed a beautiful rainbow and give it a big “smooch!”

We would like to thank our hosts Bruce Lowe and friends, and landowners John and Sheila, for a fantastic day enjoying their company and the beauty of the Cowpasture River.
