The PHWFF Washington DC VAMC Program charges into fishing season
Volunteer Bobby Davis of the Washington DC VAMC Program shares an update about this great new program below:
The participants, many of whom are veterans of the Vietnam War, have spent the winter months learning as much as possible to get ready for their first round of fly fishing action. Fly tying took center stage during the slog of a winter the Northeast experienced this season. With many beginning to learn their tying technique on the venerable wooly bugger, the participants quickly expanded their repertoire to include other useful patterns like the Clouser minnow, squirmy worms, and deceivers. As the winter drug on, many grew restless, still seeking their first on-the-stream experience.
Finally, on March 28th a small group of our participants headed out to Cedar Creek near Winchester, Virginia to be hosted by Double Spur Outfitters for their first βrealβ fishing action. From all accounts, a good time was had by all. Several of the participants, including Vietnam vet Rayfus Docker and WWII and Korea vet Robert A. Shawn, managed to land nice rainbows with the help of the guides. With several more outings already on the docket, the group is excited for a great summer.
