The Tidewater Virginia PHWFF Program is gearing up for their spring fishing trips.  Participant and Volunteer Dave Arena (a finalist in the 4th Annual Fly Tying Contest), shares an update from this great program in our Virginia Region.

We’ve decided to learn about and tie the stages of the May Fly this winter so we’ll have full fly boxes and be ready for those great fishing trips around our Region and our much anticipated second annual trip to the Catskills Mountains of New York in May for some excellent fishing in those historic waters. February 16th was Hare’s Ear Nymph day for our program as we learned about the may fly’s nymphal stage. Participants and Volunteers learned how to tie this essential pattern for their upcoming trips. Previous meetings focused on the Pheasant Tail Nymph and future meetings will focus on emerger, wet fly, dun, and spinner patterns.

We’re also preparing for our trips through raffles and very generous donations to our program. So far this year we’ve held a raffle for a Bird and Trout knife where all fifty tickets were sold within three hours. At the very beginning of the year we finished our rod raffle for a Hexagraph 7 foot 5 weight trout rod that raised substantial funds for the Program.image1

We’d like to thank our Sponsor, the Bill Wills Southeast Virginia Chapter of Trout Unlimited, the Steel Horse Sisterhood Charities, and Julie and Roland Vega for their generous contributions this year. With their help we’ll be able to realize our goal of making these fantastic trips and serving our participants on the water and in our meetings.
