This annual event is a 1 day competition comprising 10 four-man teams (each including a professional guide, sponsor, sports or entertainment celebrity, and two PHWFF veteran participants). Thanks to the generosity of the Mauritz family and Boxwood Gulch, the event takes place on a private section of the South Platte River — a beautiful, restorative, fish-filled environment. Opportunities for rainbow, brown, cutthroat, cutbow, and brook trout are abundant, with trout averaging 16” – 22” on the 3 mile stretch of water offered by Boxwood Gulch Ranch. The top 3 teams are determined by the teams total length of trout landed.
We’re also honored that The All-American Beef Battalion will once again be providing an outstanding lunch to the volunteers and veterans in attendance.
They are a group of individuals involved in the U.S. Beef Cattle Industry who work to support our service members and their families, both past and present. They organized and sponsor steak feeds, entertainment, meeting, and project with Service Members and their families and to foster among the citizens of the United States an appreciation, respect and honor for our Military Service Members whose sacrifices have, and will continue to make our freedoms possible. The Battle at Boxwood was founded by Steve Payne, a business executive and retired NHL player, who spent 10 years with the Minnesota North Stars (now the Dallas Stars). In his own words, “Supporting our military is very important to me, so I spend a lot of time doing so. With help from some generous, caring friends, I created the Battle at Boxwood event now in it’s third year. The event supports the wonderful organization, Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF), by raising money and getting recovering wounded warriors on the water for a day of trout fishing with sports celebrities from the NHL, NFL and MLB. It takes place each August at the Boxwood Gulch Ranch in Shawnee, CO, which is owned/operated by Dan & Karen Mauritz”.
