By Chuck Coronato, Assistant Program Lead, Northeast NEW JERSEY

The Northeast New Jersey program has been busy building fly rods with volunteer and rod builder George Wilkinson guiding the process. Project Healing Waters participant and Navy Veteran Richard Mills has now built several several rods at PHW meetings, and he didn’t let the winter season stop him from testing out the rod that he recently completed. As you can tell from his email report that follows, Rich knows how to catch fish on a fly in any season, and he proves that the joys of fly fishing aren’t just limited to fishing for trout in wilderness setting.

Rich Mills with his new rod and a freshly caught crappie.

“Hello, I tried out the 8-foot rod we just completed. North Hudson County Park Pond was not crowded, and the fish were cooperating. I caught 21 in one-and-a-half hours: 16 crappie and 5 bluegill. The biggest crappie was about a pound.
My first fish of the new year! The rod casts well, especially on the roll cast.
Thank you Project Healing Waters!”
