The Fly Fishing Show in Somerset, NJ takes place each January at the Garden State Exhibit Center. It is a consumer show with locations across the country January-March that works with fly fishing celebrities, authors, film producers, business owners, manufacturers, professionals and fly tiers to create a show for novice-advanced fly fishers. Additionally it offers fly tying and casting demonstrations, classes on topics from entomology to fly tying, casting to nymphing, and everything in between for those in-attendance. The Somerset, NJ show represents the largest fly-fishing only show on the East Coast and on the weekend of January 27-29, 2017 it drew PHWFF leadership, participants, volunteers, and programs to this corner of New Jersey to spread the word about our cause and to soak-in the vast fly fishing and educational offerings available.
We were delighted to have dual-representation at the show this year with both the New York/New Jersey Region and our National Headquarters staffing informational booths in different areas of the Exhibit Center (our thanks to Temple Fork Outfitters for their continuous generosity). This afforded us a special opportunity to share our mission and it’s impact (both regionally and nationally!) with the thousands of attendees who have yet to be exposed to it and to simultaneously thank, and visit with, our many friends, volunteers, participants and supporters in the fly fishing community. The Somerset show brings an air of “family reunion” with it, as we can visit with our many friends and supporting companies that we see in-person only a handful of times each year.
Due to the wide array of all-things fly fishing, and the numerous educational seminars offered, many PHWFF Programs took field-trips to the show. It was clear that the bevy of knowledge, fly fishing celebrities, and awesome companies present contributed to their growth in the sport and further solidified the bonds of friendship between volunteers, participants, and Programs.
The NYC Program made their annual pilgrimage to the show and the outing was led by long-time volunteers Jill Chavooshian, Dean Chavooshian, and Scottie Daniels who were accompanied by participants Bob Moran, Frankie Page Mayo, Herbert Sweat, Lee Beard, Stephanie Cox-Alston, Scott White, Kathleen Toomer and Maria Bouziotis.
Countless volunteers and participants were in attendance throughout the weekend. We were also excited to see Program volunteers and participants from Coatesville, PA; Fort Belvoir, VA; and Fredericksburg, VA making the trip.
As is the case each year, we were truly honored and humbled by the tremendous support we receive from the fly fishing community and for the great opportunity to share our mission during this special stop on The Fly Fishing Show tour. Our deepest thanks to all who visited with us in Somerset, NJ!
There will be four more stops for The Fly Fishing Show through to early March. Each show will host a PHWFF booth and provide you an opportunity to meet our great participants, volunteers, and supporters, pick up some PHWFF gear, and to learn how you can help us provide our unique form of therapy those who have made great sacrifices in the service of our nation.
